As photography goes, children are one of my favorite subjects.  When I book family or children’s portraits, I make the parents aware that for the couple of hours that I am working with their family, their children are PERFECT!  I need kids to be themselves in order to capture who they are.  In my experience, kids are honest.  Honest in this case means not caring what others think of you.  Young children will roll on the ground because they feel like it, they will yell at you without blinking, they will hug strangers, they will ask questions, they will do whatever they feel like doing for no other reason than they feel like doing it.  I find that this makes my job difficult, challenging and fun!  I never know what to expect.  Each child is different and I need to be ready to work with whatever comes my way.  Kids are unpredictable and I love the challenge!

Shooting my own kids is a completely different animal altogether.  When mom is a photographer, the camera comes out constantly.  Kids who are used to having a camera around will be themselves in front of it more quickly than a child who only sees it at birthdays and holidays.  This is a great side effect!  However, because I’m Mom and not a stranger, they need to be in the mood to have their picture taken or else they run and hide…  I need to be on my toes to get the shots I hope for.
