Newborn Portraits|Newborn Photography Buffalo, NY
In an attempt to keep my new year’s resolutions about stepping outside my comfort levels in photography, I decided to delve into the world of newborn photography. Now don’t get me wrong, I have had PLENTY of newborn experience between my own babies, babysitting and being a nanny, but photographing a newborn is a completely different matter.
Doctors, nurses, newborn websites, and midwifes will all tell you some very interesting things about newborns. Along with their eyes not being able to focus very well, and the fact that most of their day is spent sleeping, they can also sense their mothers. If mom is nearby, the baby will know, will wake up, and will look for food, whether they are hungry or not! This makes photographing other people’s babies difficult. Mothers want and need to be near their precious cargo. It is very hard to let a stranger come into your house, hold your baby, pose your baby, and listen to the suggestion of maybe having dad nearby instead.
In my first attempt at this new genre, I was a little apprehensive. I did not want to try anything too difficult and if something wasn’t quite working, I moved on to something else rather than stress the baby or mom out. This experience helped me figure out who I am in newborn photography. I feel comfortable around newborns. I can get them back to being calm (if not asleep) with no problem. They smell so sweet and I love their squishy little cheeks. Newborns are sweet and cute no matter what, so they make the perfect little models.
I certainly hope I get to photograph a few more infants soon!
