What to wear for great family photography|Family Portraits in Buffalo, NY

One question I am asked consistently after booking a family portrait session is "What do we wear?".  Well, Obviously that will depend...  I am based in Buffalo, NY so winter can be harsh.  In this case I will tell my clients to bundle up!  There are some gorgeous dress coats out there and adding hats and scarfs to remove or change will create more variety from one session.

Spring and Autumn are also quite cold.  Sweater and cardigans are a great way to shift your look without completely changing your wardrobe.

Summer is my favorite season!  I will generally tell clients to dress comfortably and cool.  Avoid tops with busy prints or large logos.  Avoid clothing with bright neon colors.  Baseball hats should stay at home!  Visors can create very harsh shadows on the top of the face.  Sunglasses are also a no, no. In the summer months, it can be tough to be versatile.  Scarfs are too warm, sweaters are out of the question as are coats...  Families will normally choose to bring an additional outfit to change into.  Summer can be a bit difficult to shoot, but I love the challenge of the harsh sun.

Wardrobes for big extended families is another concern for many clients.  I typically stick to the general rules I listed above and beg that the families don't try and match everyone exactly.  Complementary colors are great!  Sticking to a color family is always pleasing, but when everyone comes in wearing the same outfit, it becomes very distracting.

I have recently had a run of large families I was fortunate to have shot!  The Ermer's were so sweet and nice, The Logan's were very active and outgoing, and the Frost family were hilarious and had me laughing the whole time!  All of these families made me smile!  I am so excited to present these images this week!  Enjoy!
